"Is that your final answer?" is the catchy phrase from the popular game show, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", which is a pivotal point of the plot of the movie.
This is the story of a scrawny 18 year-old orphan, Jamal Malik (Dev Pate), from the slums of Mumbai who appears on India's version of the television show. Upon reaching the final question, he is arrested on suspicions of cheating and must defend himself and his dignity by reliving his tragic and heroic upbringing from simple, childhood glee to teenage trouble and heartache.
On the show, with a whole nation watching, the boy is just one question away from winning the jackpot on India's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? But when the show breaks for the evening, at the behest of its arrogant and patronizing host the police arrests him on suspicion of cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, the poor boy tells the police inspector the tragic story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up — of their many adventures, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of course of Latika (Freida Pinto), the girl he's loved and yet repeatedly lost.
He proves his innocence and goes back to the show for the last round. For the last question he uses a Call a Friend joker and calls Latika, because actually his point of participating in the show was to be able to have a chance to contact her.
This is the kind of truly touching romantic story that will leave you breathless!
